"Solidarity City": SAB General Assembly (February 11)

There are currently at least 500,000 people living in Canada without status, including migrants whose refugee claims have been refused or whose temporary permits have expired. With its unjust and racist immigration policies, Canada creates a class of “illegals” – thousands of individuals and families who live in poverty, insecurity and fear, all while being the most exploited in the labour market.
Many non-status people survive in Canada for years, making roots and starting families. They are often denied fundamental rights and services such as adequate and affordable health care, education and welfare. Non-status families live in fear, stress and desperation while many work in dangerous and unhealthy work conditions with no legal recourses.
Since it’s foundation, Solidarity Across Borders has organized around its main demands: the implementation of a regularization program for all people without status (Status for All!), an end to deportations and detentions, and the abolition of security certificates. The “Solidarity City” campaign initiates another aspect of this struggle: guaranteeing access to basic services (health care, education, decent work, housing) regardless of immigration status.
During our upcoming February 11 Assembly, we will officially begin our Solidarity City campaign. Everyone is welcome to come participate in one of our committees, and to give their opinions and feedback on this project. The following sub-committees have been proposed: education, health care, work, and a Status for All declaration. We will also discuss the possibility of publishing a newspaper and organizing a Status for All march in 2010.
